South Africa’s décor bloggers speak up: What they’re loving right now

We’ve asked some of South Africa’s favourite décor and design bloggers about their favourite looks and trends right now. Here’s what they had to say.

I’m loving the combination of plant motifs and dark grey/charcoal furniture and walls – put them together, and you can create a cocoon that invites you to retreat at the end of the day. It’s also easy to incorporate into your existing look – simply add a few pot plants or living walls if you don’t want to invest in wallpaper or scatters with a tropical theme. I even like to pop a few branches from a Delicious Monster into a vase, and it instantly lifts the space.

I’m also enjoying “black” kitchens (with black tiles and all black Smeg appliances, for example), and easy inside/outside entertaining spaces. I think one of the most simple ways to create an entertaining space is by adding a bar cart – I recently created one from a wooden tea trolley.

Vicki Sleet, I Want That

I constantly find myself pinning minimalist spaces with a Scandinavian bent – spaces with a mostly white and grey palette and blonde wood touches and maybe some textured elements. It’s mainly because my home is anything but minimalist. No matter how hard I try, I find myself returning to pattern and colour.

I’m really into indoor plants at the moment and I’ve got them in virtually every room in the house. I’ve recently tried to contain my growing collection by filling a tray on a coffee table with different sized pots in the same colour, rather than having them dotted all over our space.

I’m currently drawn to softer spaces with dusty pinks, terracottas and peach tones, perhaps as an antidote to the overuse of the industrial/hipster look that has been introduced into so many coffee shops and eateries.

I’m also enjoying the boho chic look which incorporates textures, rattan, cane and plants in a fresh and contemporary way. The various organic elements bring in warmth as well as a handcrafted touch which so many of us are connecting with. This kind of look really appeals to me because you can make it your own and add personality.

I’m loving the “jungalow” vibe with lots of greenery and textures to make a space feel decadent. It’s perfect for the tropical Durban climate and pops of fresh greenery instantly make you feel like you’re on holiday.

I tend to veer away from trends, rather focusing on what I love and simply can’t live without. But there’s something about a touch of metallic that attracts the magpie in me and I’ll add pops of this with small décor pieces to create a luxe effect in curated corners of my home.
