Stand-out kitchens from 2019

Written by Shereen Lurie

Some kitchens are born to stand out from the crowd. Here are a selection of kitchens that really impressed the team at SA Home Owner with their unique design features and top quality craftsmanship.

1. Elementary harmony

When it comes to a favourite space for the residents of the home, it is without a doubt the breakfast nook in the kitchen, with a seamless folding door that opens onto a secluded garden and deck. “This is a favourite spot as it feels as if you are sitting in the garden.” There is also a fountain just 2m away from this space, where the birds come to feed – making this home, in all its splendour, the perfect retreat.

2. Majestic glory

WK Kitchens was briefed by the owner to create a traditional shaker kitchen, while maintaining a clean, contemporary, modern feel with functionality. No detail was overlooked, from the jointless glass-panelled doors to the handcrafted cup handles and knobs. Solid oak inlays and antique brass work finish off the kitchen beautifully.

3. The new luxury

The brief from owners of this home was simple: a high-end and minimalist kitchen with user-friendly design elements. And with this request, Linear Concepts, an innovative company that prides itself on its bespoke European kitchen design that combines technical quality and fine craftmanship, designed and manufactured this elegant, contemporary kitchen. A perfect fit for this modern, luxury home, the kitchen oozes streamlined minimalist appeal with a sleek, high-gloss finish on the cabinetry, which creates the illusion of a bigger space. This is paired with a fitted dining area that instantly adds a cosy touch to the area, making it ideal for an informal seated family meal.

4. A family connected

ProReno Kitchens specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of new cabinetry for kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and other areas of the home. For this home, the company was responsible for the cabinetry in the kitchen, scullery, bedrooms and bathrooms. The Caesarstone, Neolith and natural granite work surfaces were sourced by ProReno and installed by a specialist partner company.

5. Modern with a twist

There is one decorative element that the owners of this home have paid particular attention to. “We love lighting and the effect it creates – it adds so much character and conversation. So this is something we really focused on – be it the hanging naked bulbs, our brass chain lanterns, the sea urchin leather chandelier or our bold, rustic pendent lights in the kitchen. There’s always something fresh and different to catch the eye and that’s why our house has a ‘wow’ factor.”

6. Where the living is easy

From the architecture to the interiors, this home naturally complements its surroundings and its owners, who are in love with their dream home. “We love how you can enter the front door and immediately feel like you are in the centre of the house. The kitchen and living areas open out seamlessly to the covered entertainment areas beyond. When the doors are open, we feel like we’re outside and can entertain easily and chat quite comfortably with our mates at the braai, pizza oven and firepit while still being in the kitchen,” say the owners.

7. A fine blend

A specialist in fine custom-made cabinetry, Martin Meyer Kitchens (MMK) created this elegant contemporary kitchen. The owners desired a modern white kitchen that was sleek and of clean lines. MMK complemented this aesthetic with a Neolith island, achieving a striking balance. Materialising a dream, the company prides itself on its skillful designers, fully equipped factory and installation teams.

8. A dream come true

There are many rooms and features that this home owner loves about her home, such as the master bedroom’s cupboards and island and the striking and elegant wallpaper behind the master bathroom, but it’s the kitchen that wins her heart. “If I have to single out one room it would be the kitchen. I still can’t believe it is our home’s kitchen. It is white – my favourite colour – and spacious, airy and light. The previous kitchen was dark and had only one small window. It is our main gathering point and we enjoy every meal around the kitchen table,” says the owner.
