Bathrooms

The transformers

Written by Shereen Lurie

The right lighting in your bathroom can transform the space. Here’s what you need to consider for the perfect lighting combo.

A variety of lighting

“I always like to incorporate three types of lighting in the bathroom – decorative lighting, including pendants, floor lamps and wall lights; technical lighting, including downlights, a makeup mirror, track and spot lights; and ambient lighting such as an LED strip light. Having all three would equip you well for early-morning shaves, makeup regimes and skincare. It is important to give your bathroom a decorative feel that goes with the look and feel of the house and contributes to a sense of calm when using the room.” – Brad Kalish, director of Streamlight

Incorporate mirror lighting

“While overhead lighting is key, it’s not enough for task-oriented activities such as applying makeup or shaving. This is why lighting your vanity mirror is a must. But if wall space is an issue and you can’t add sconces, then a mirror light is the way to go. This type of fixture is a mirror and light in one and is a highly functional addition to any bathroom regardless of size.” – Kelly Klopper, brand manager at Eurolux

Consider LED or strip lights

“LED tape or strip lights are commonly used throughout modern homes, and the bathroom is no exception. As bathrooms are sometimes used in the middle of the night, you may want to consider LED tape lights under a vanity or countertop edge, allowing a soft glow of accent lighting as well as task lighting, allowing you to move safely around your bathroom while allowing your eyes to slowly adjust.” – Barry Reed, designer at Zebbies

Remember this!

“Due to the damp nature of bathrooms, all light fixtures for bathroom application should be sealed or IP-rated – for most purposes IP44 is sufficient. With outdoor light fittings becoming increasingly more stylish, we’re able to suggest using outdoor lights in the bathroom. They carry IP ratings that are at the very least suitable for bathrooms, and they are sturdy and strong, built to endure the outdoors so you have peace of mind knowing they will last in your bathroom.” – Barry Reed, designer at Zebbies
