The basics of basins

By Daniela Sperotto

Basins are becoming more of a focal point and feature within the bathroom rather than just a mundane piece of sanitaryware. Home owners can now add a bit of character and fun to the bathroom through unusual materials, a funky design or a coloured basin.

Materials

With a plethora of materials available besides the standard ceramic bowls, there is something for everyone.

“Basins were traditionally white ceramic, but with advances in manufacturing there are various materials available: virtuous China, reconstructed stone, acrylic, natural stone, sealed cement, glass or even a combination of materials,” explains Peter Jefferson from On Tap.

These days, with the advances in new technology, there is less debate on durability as in the past. When it comes to what to choose, shop around and decide on the product that best suits your bathroom theme. Newby Charnley, from Finda SA, warns against buying products that do not have a quality guarantee. Make sure that you buy your sanitaryware from a reputable company.

Although traditional white ceramic is always popular, the more daring can look around for unusual materials such as the unique wooden basins from Forest Creations. These will add a natural feel for the more eco-conscious or those just looking to add a bit of texture to the pristine presentation of their bathroom.

Design

”Styles are even more varied than the materials. You name it, it’s available,” says Peter. The more popular ones are pedestal or floor-mounted, wall-mounted and countertop or vanity basins. Each style has its own advantages, depending on your personal needs and requirements.

Top-mounted basins on a vanity or counter have the advantage of a larger working surface, which is good in terms of bathroom accessories and decorations.

Lance Porter, from On The Tiles, advises one to look at height of the vanity or counter as this will determine whether the basin is sunken or placed as countertop basin.

Wall-mounted or floating basins are becoming more popular and create an elegant and sophisticated modern and minimalistic look, agrees Becky Rossouw, from Lifestyle Bathrooms. Alternative surfaces may be required, but these styles of basins are perfect for smaller bathrooms.

Whatever your choice of design, style and material, your bathroom basin can be a great way to integrate something different into your bathroom. “When they are purchased with all the factors in mind, they truly make people smile!” concludes Becky.
