Turn up the lights

Valerie Poyurs of Radiant says that the modern-day kitchen places equal premium on functionality and beauty. “Correct and creative lighting in this area can transform it into a visually stunning feature,” she explains.

As kitchens are generally a hot place already, one should opt for fittings that don’t emit too much heat. Eli Kalmi of K.Light Import explains that since kitchen lights generally burn for long hours, it is advisable to use low energy consumption bulbs. “T5 fluorescent lights don’t emit any heat, their light flows through the room without creating any unwanted shadows, and they are low in energy consumption too,” he adds.

On the subject of “going green”, LED light fittings are another great way of incorporating energy-efficient light into your home. “Generally the working and cooking areas need to be well-lit but take care to ensure that the lighting is not too harsh as this is a sure mood killer,” Valarie adds.

Another trend taking the kitchen by storm is under-counter lighting. Here, experts place either spot lights or fluorescent tubes under counters or cabinetry to create a soft and very modern look.

If your kitchen is open-plan and adjacent to the dining room, try to incorporate the lighting in such a way that the entire area can be lit up for working, or dimmed down for a pleasant dining experience. Crystal fittings such as chandeliers look beautiful when placed over the table or breakfast nooks.
