Featured Homes Modern

Coming home

While living and working in Australia, these home owners decided that they wanted to settle down and move back home. When a friend brought them a magazine that featured an equestrian estate, they knew this would be the perfect place to call home once they returned to sunny South Africa.

“We are passionate about the African landscape, and we were looking to start a family and settle down. Waterfall ticked all the boxes for a place for our future,” the home owners share.

After selecting a unique stand in shape, gradient and outlook, they started the process of building their dream family home. “When we met with the architect, we knew that we wanted to build a home that would be like a contemporary lodge, which encompassed unique designs and maximised the space of the stand and the lovely views,” notes the home owner. And they were actively involved throughout the process.

The home is ideal for a modern, interactive family. They enjoy features such as the indoor-outdoor entertainment area, open-plan lounge and dining area, a kitchen with a separate scullery, and a family room that runs adjacent to the entertaining area. “I love entertaining,” says the home owner.

The entertainment space allows the family to enjoy a braai overlooking the pool and garden, thanks to a split-level patio. They can also entertain friends around their fitted bar and wine cellar. The home has a lot of open, but connected spaces.

The upstairs section of the house offers views of the dam and allows the owners to enjoy the South African sunrise and sunset, which they missed when they lived abroad. When it came to decorating the interiors, there was no need to call in the experts; this home owner knew exactly what she wanted to achieve with each space.

“I wanted to create a sense of synergy throughout the house, and make the home feel open and accessible for every member of the family, while still keeping it modern and sophisticated.”

Neutral colours are accompanied by various wood finishes, with pops of colour introduced to accentuate certain areas in the home. The result is a calm and serene atmosphere that is a complete fit with the natural surroundings of the home.
