One on one

One on one with Sera Holland

Sera Holland is a textile designer and owner of Cape Town based textile business, Handmade By Me.

I started Handmade By Me to make pretty things that I wanted in my own home, and to distract me from my graphic design job that I wasn’t enjoying anymore.

I design fabric – and then turn it into handmade interior products and fashion accessories.

The aim of Handmade By Me is to offer you something special and unique for your home, yourself and your friends.

My favourite Handmade By Me products are probably my scarves, tote bags and purses, as I wear/use them ALL the time! I love how I can interchange different designs depending on what I feel like, or what I am wearing!

I am inspired by everything around me: travel, living in South Africa, animals and plants/flowers, high-fashion, product design, decor, colour… The list goes on and on.

South African design is quite exciting at the moment. With the spotlight on African design around the globe, it is such a great time to really show the world what we can do. I have already noticed the increase in talented young local designers and artists making beautiful things (by international standards) and turning them into sellable products both here and on the international markets. It may be an extremely challenging time, with our not so great currency, post office strikes, mills closing down, loadshedding etc, but if you can find a way to make it work in this beautiful country, you are on to something special.

I’m not too sure where I see myself in the next 5 years, but if they are anything like the last 5, I am in for a treat.
