A place of treasures

When it came time for this home owner to relocate, a charming seaside retreat presented itself as the perfect contrast to her fast-paced city life. A brand-new beginning that still allowed for the “incorporation of memories” from previous homes, this beach house is an eclectic mix of Victorian, classic modern and contemporary styles.

All that remains of the original house is its outer shell. A sweeping view of the ocean was an important component of the home owner’s brief for her new space, which she was able to beautifully capture from the master bedroom.

The interior of the home was designed to accommodate visits from a large family – the ground floor is open-plan, bright and spacious. This space – encompassing the
lounge, entertainment area and dining room – enables the family to spend time together, but allows for privacy too, if it’s desired.

The “braai-room”, an enclosed patio that can open up into the main house and onto the garden area, is an integral part of the family’s lifestyle. When the weather co-operates, with the stacking doors and shutters open, the family is able to enjoy the sunshine, swimming pool, garden and glorious views beyond. Should the wind or rain intrude, the glass stacking doors are closed, but, together with the overhead skylight, allow natural light in, and the family is still able to make use of the pizza oven, braai and seating space.

When it’s something more traditional on the menu, the kitchen is a cook’s delight. Spacious and modern, it is furnished in chic white, complemented by integrated silver appliances. Recipe books and objets are tokens of collected experiences, and add colour and feeling to the area.

By means of a contemporary glass and steel staircase, flanked by a wall of gilded artworks, one reaches the master bedroom. The room and its en-suite bathroom showcase a Victorian-meets-modern style. The vintage-styled bedroom has a classic design, while the bathroom is a modern delight. This is the home owner’s beloved “den” – a space where she can enjoy life on her terms, whether by relaxing in a leisurely bath or taking in the views that surround her.
