5 good reasons to use an architect

By Sungula Nkabinde

Building or renovating a home is an expensive process. Even before the official work starts, the costs can run pretty high as one needs to have plans for that home. That is why there are people who try to save money by doing the project without the services of a professional architect. This, in most cases, would be a mistake or, at the very least, a very shortsighted endeavor. Here are five reasons why you should always use an architect for your building and renovation projects.

To clarify your vision. Architects have extensive experience and knowledge in their profession and therefore can give you advice that can improve your initial ideas.

To see the bigger picture. You as a layman may not be able to forsee the shortcomings of your own plans, whereas architects will know about the impact of the climate, of using certain materials over others and other such factors.

For creative problem solving. Architects are trained to take a creative approach when projects run into problems. One such problem could be the discovery of a pipeline below your property, or a law on an estate that prevents the use of burglar bars on your home.

To save on costs. While this may seem counter intuitive, enlisting the services of an architect may save you money in the long run. This is because they have extensive knowledge of affordable suppliers and may have various tricks up their sleeves to give a home a lofty look at a fraction of the cost. Also, a well-designed building can reduce your bills now and increase its long-term value.

For peace of mind. Architects can manage your project from site selection to completion. This, if necessary, would include coordinating a team of specialist consultants such as landscape architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, interior designers, builders and subcontractors.
