Amber Road

Written by Jess Binns

When sisters, Yasmine Ghoniem and Katy Svalbe joined creative forces, the outcome was ‘Amber Road’ – a Sydney-based firm, which specialises in interiors, headed up by Yasmine, and landscape design, which Katy runs.

The house shown here is one of their latest projects that has left me a little weak at the knees! Positioned right on the beach, in the suburb of Cronulla, the house posed several challenges, the main issues being the ‘boxy’ appearance and the lack of natural light within each space. On the plus side, the existing marble floors gave a great starting point with its timeless appeal.

The owners were very clear that the design ethos carry an unpretentious and simplistic approach. This is reflected in the Japanese influences and design principles, which flow from room to room. The colour palette is confined to rich blacks, warm greys and fresh whites that complement the pale timbers of birch and American oak.

The exterior flows seamlessly to the shore, cleverly tackling the natural incline with structured trees and ornamental grass against pale stone clad walls and natural toned pavers.

Amber Road is a young, up-and-coming design company that I foresee making waves in Australia.
