Situated among the luscious tropical surrounds of Umdloti, a small resort town on Kwazulu-Natal’s north coast, this family home was inspired by the owners’ travels to the Far East.

The couple’s brief to the architect, Hans Coetzee of Hans Coetzee Architect, was a home with a contemporary take on an Indonesian beach-style bungalow that maximised the view of the lush tropical vegetation and serene ocean.

This resulted in a complete rebuild, with only the foundation of the previous house remaining, as it was the location of the plot and its amazing views of the landscape and ocean that attracted the couple. They desired a home that would not only become a sanctuary from their busy work lives, but an environment that would be perfect for their young family.
