School library built using shipping containers

By Rami Moorosi

In a country where illiteracy rates are high, libraries are the lifelines of South Africa’s next generation. It is for this reason that a dynamic trio – Kuba, Allesio and Mike who form part of AOJ (Architects of Justice) have launched The Seed Project in conjunction with McWeiler Library. The purpose of this initiative is to build libraries with a difference in schools.

“Every school needs a library, as it plays an important role in creating an exciting learning environment for our children and the society as a whole. We wanted to help make reading a pleasurable experience, for the children to be inspired and a space to access innovative thinking. We have done this through incorporating colours, shapes, pictures and stripes,” explains Kuba from AOJ.

The construction took only four months, as the team used shipping containers for the structure. These where chosen as they are easy to transport and are recyclable. AOJ retrofitted insulation throughout with the use of cross ventilation and passive cooling so that the space inside is comfortable without adding additional running costs for the school.

The AOJ team hopes to build more school libraries in other areas using other modular construction options.
