Bathroom renovation tips

By Rami Moorosi

Renovating your bathroom is an exciting exercise but it can also be an overwhelming experience. However with the right planning and knowledge you can take out the guess-work and stress to create a space that you will serve you well and for years to come.

Planning for success

Start with a clear idea of what you want. For example, do you need a multifunctional space for the whole family, requiring a bath and shower or a luxurious spa space for one or two?

  • From this you can consider what fittings you want and what style you are after, and then start looking at what is available.
  • Consider where the existing plumbing and electrics are situated, as moving and installing new pipes, electrics and waste outlets can be a costly excersise.
  • One way to redo your bathroom is by replacing tiles, sanitaryware and taps. This would be more cost effective as there are no additional plumbing changes required.

Budget

Once a decision has been made to the extent of the renovation, you need to workout your budget. It is a good idea to add 10% to your total budget for unforeseen expenses that may occur. Your budget will also determine who to approach for professional help. There are bathroom specialists that concentrate on bathroom makeovers. Another option is to approach an architect or interior designer to redesign your bathroom.

Hiring a plumber

  • Find a reputable plumber who has a plumbers’ card approved by the local authorities.
  • Ask the plumber for references and check them.
  • Negotiate paying an upfront deposit of 30%, a further 30% halfway through the project and the final 40% only on completion of the work and when you are satisfied that everything works.
