Designing a guest bathroom is about creating a welcoming space for friends and family, but it is also a wonderful opportunity to express your personality and taste.

Space-saving sanitaryware

As guest bathrooms tend to be smaller than family or en suite bathrooms, it is generally best to keep the contents simple and uncluttered. Choose sanitaryware that is compact in size with clean, modern lines to make the most of the available space.

Experts from Bathroom World note that today’s trends are geared towards slim-line freestanding equipment in the guest bathroom .

In terms of basins, Nico van der Merwe of Dado Creations says: “Where a cabinet and a vanity are not possible the freestanding basin is a must. It covers the ever present bottle trap that can never be marked as stylish. The design will also give a sense of style to an otherwise normal guest bathroom. ”

Choose a bath that saves space, for instance a shower and bath all in one. Alternatively make the most of the space by installing a corner bath. Curved corner or pentagon shower cubicles also make for great space savers.

Another great inclusion is the new Monolith cistern from Geberit which is available exclusively from Italtile. Stylishly designed to give any dated bathroom a new and fresh feel, the cistern’s slim and compact design allows for a contemporary concealed aesthetic without infringing on the spatial parameters of the bathroom, making it an ideal guest bathroom where space is limited.

Colour and accessories

It is advisable to select a colour palette of soft neutral and natural hues to decorate the guest bathroom. Experts also advise home owners to select light-coloured tiles for the floor and walls. Your choice of colour and personal taste can be introduced through decorative accessories, artwork, or soft opulent towels.

Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager of Tile Africa says: “To ensure there is sufficient storage and hanging space, fit glass shelves over the basin and bath to keep items such as shampoo and shower gel within easy reach. Use double-rodded towel rails to hang multiple towels and install a hand-towel rail next to the basin.”

By combining aesthetics and practicality, you can make your guests feel at home, while impressing them with your sense of style.
