Living in Bantry Bay in this north-facing apartment below Lion’s Head presents a multitude of luxuries. To live anywhere along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard seems a privilege not easily beaten. Yet, Bantry Bay with its micro-climate and moderate temperatures, and where the Cape doctor is conspicuous by its absence for at least 290 days of the year, beats it all.
These fortunate home owners briefed their architects to create a home away from home that would exude a relaxing, child-friendly environment suited to summer entertainment close to the beach.
Their choice was one of 16 apartments in this building, where each unit enjoys extensive ocean frontage, as well as direct lift access and a plunge pool. Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects was appointed as the design architect and Dennis Fabian Berman Architects the architect of record on this large project. By maximising this world-class location in an understated style, the building was tucked away below street level – the result being no street elevation and no obstruction of sea views from the scenic drive.
This project was successfully executed on a sloping site that needed lateral support on both sides of the building, and where existing rock and granite presented its own challenges.
The Antoni Associates project team headed by Mark Rielly attended to the interior architectural and decor design. Together they created a bright and breezy interior, flowing to the focal point at the pool terrace, where long summer days could be spent outdoors. They also created a relaxing environment suited to dining, lounging, entertaining and sunbathing by integrating the outdoor bar and braai gazebo.
For the completion of the interior decor design, this family provided pictorial imagery of their choices of furniture styles and fabrics. Together the husband’s and wife’s preferences, from outdoor entertainment areas to painted furniture upholstered with romantic florals for a chic beach holiday environment, were catered for. Modern living spaces were created by softening the sleek interior with the client’s existing art collection. Coupled with a classic approach to the decor and furnishings, the end product is a chic beachside holiday environment fit for many occasions.
Every room in this house presents its own beauty, as it sits comfortably within flowing interiors that extend across patios to the magnificent outdoors.
The blissful relaxation that awaits this family when they are ready to soak up the South African sun can all be done in the midst of the magnificent Atlantic Ocean.
