Build it green – part 16

Build it green Build it greenBuild it green Build it greenI’m afraid God beat us to the roof wetting. It poured and poured on Sunday, and the house isn’t quite water-tight yet, so we gave up on the idea of a “skottle” and “boerewors”. Despite that, this week saw progress, progress, progress! The vermiculite screed is on the floors, the second MgO skin is going up on the outside, and two ceilings have been installed!

On closer inspection, I noticed the “brandering” on the roof trusses, and guess what… they are made of steel! Some of the eaves have also been boxed in (also using MgO boards) so that the steel is completely covered, and it looks so neat and finished. The last sheets of chromadek on the roof are also up, just a few joints to finish off.

Our landscaped garden is still a dream, but I am pleased to announce that the moat has finally been filled in, so at least we can drop the extra insurance for broken ankles.

My husband and I have many good brain cells between us, but one that is lacking on both sides is artistic flair. Thus, our choice of interior tiles was quickly vetoed by the interior decorator. Luckily, God blesses us all differently, and she was able to put us on the right track. I am looking forward to seeing how the kitchen ties fit in with the colour scheme of the open-plan living area, and with a bit of luck / help we will be able to choose some harmonious curtaining.

We are fast approaching the end of the year, and as our anticipated deadline is only two weeks away, it has been dawning on us that we will only be moving next year. (I am secretly very pleased, because I haven’t packed a single box yet). Non-the-less, I still think we have done pretty well, surviving a truck driver’s strike, a monumental hail storm, summer rainfall, and a back order of dove-grey chromadek roofing. At the rate that we have been choosing finishes, I expect the last few weeks to be full of action, so we will keep you posted right up until our team leaves the site for the Christmas break. The next highly awaited event, however, is the arrival of the window frames. Catch you next week!!
