Living Spaces

Floors… much more than something to stand on

In any home flooring is critical in setting the tone and mood of a room – it forms the base in which everything else is laid out. “Flooring can create drama from the moment you enter a space or form a subtle background to a luxurious living room,” says Liza Watermeyer, Retail Display Coordinator at Tile Africa.

Depending on the look you are aiming for, tiles can be laid out in these ways;

Straight lay – this is the simplest tile pattern and it showcases the beauty of the tile.

Diagonal lay – tiles are set at a 45 degree angle. It adds a little interest and makes the floor look expensive.

Running bond – this basic layout is also called a brick or offset pattern. The tiles are offset by half the width of the tile.

Checkerboard – two colours of square tiles alternate to create this pattern. They can be set straight or diagonal. Black and white tiles are a popular choice for this look.

Diagonal with dots – large tiles are notched at regular intervals with smaller accents.

Modular – three or more different sized tiles are used to form a pattern.

“Tiles are  extremely practical and are easy to maintain, plus they will continue to look beautiful through years of use,” she says.
