Home at sea

Any people dream of living in a house at the sea, looking for tranquillity, open spaces and walks along the shore that promote a healthier lifestyle. But these proud home owners have turned their dream into reality.

This beautiful home boasts breathtaking views of the ocean, Table Mountain, Robben Island and Blouberg beach. Drawing inspiration from the sea, the owners aimed at creating a fresh, breezy home, one that reflected the tranquillity of the beach, while still being stylish, contemporary and suited to the family’s lifestyle – a home with straight lines, open spaces and plenty of light. Another gola was to make the home as energy-efficient as possible, using solar panels, solar geysers, pellet fireplaces, LED lighting and an energy-saving induction stove.

The house consists of three levels: the basement with three garages; the ground floor with entrance hall, lounge and five en-suite bedrooms; and an upper level. The first floor, which is the home owners’ favourite space in the home, consists of a gourmet kitchen with separate pantry and scullery; open-plan dining area and lounge with pellet-burning fireplace, entertainment area with gas and wood-burning braai; and magnificent sea and mountain views

“We fell in love with the entrance-hall chandelier even before the house was built; it reminded us of the foam on Blouberg beach. The glass bubbles reflect the outside light and are a beautiful introduction to our stylish home,” the home owner says.

A bubble-inspired chandelier was also added to the main bedroom, adding a touch of glamour to a space decorated in tranquil shades of white, grey and walnut. These colours dominate in the most commonly used areas too, such as the dining room and lounge, where splashes of blue bring the beach palette into the home.

The beautiful grain of the American walnut cabinetry adds character and depth. In the children’s bedrooms, touches of colour take into account the girls’ personalities and preferences. Throughout, natural wood and whitewashed floors create that “beach” feeling.

The home owner says one of the most enjoyable experiences of building this home was working with an interior decorator, who was invaluable when it came to artwork, wallpaper, soft furnishings, upholstery of chairs, bathroom tiling and chandeliers.

Most of the soft couches and chairs are neutral shades, and splashes of colour were added using textured cushions, rugs and art pieces.

According to the home owner, after two stressful years of being on site and being involved in all stages of the building process, the experience of moving into the new home felt surreal. The dream had finally become reality.
