Malamen

Written by Jess Binns

Deep in the heart of Mexico City’s district of Polanco, sits a new restaurant that tells a story through its decor and food.

Malamen was conjured up by one of the partners of this business, who discovered an old trunk of photos, memories and cookery memoirs from a distant relative, decades old.  Taking this largely unknown woman’s collection and piecing together other vintage items to embellish the story further, Malamen pays homage to this, part-fictional, tale.

Interior designer, Ricardo Casas took the lead role in bringing the restaurant to life. Alongside illustrator Marco Colin, the pair worked on pictorial decor, upcycled items and rich metals such as the stunning brass geometric trays made into wall lights above the bar. The main feature has to be the abundance of decorative ceiling roses fixed to a false ceiling with single light bulbs protruding from each.

I can imagine walking into this space that holds a strong sense of mysterious character through the old photos and drawings, which adorn the walls. To sit and wonder about such a lady whilst sampling one of her adapted recipes (yes, these were put to good use too!) in this wonderful oasis must be one to be experienced.
