Modern global style

Written by Shereen Lurie

Modern global style gives decorators the opportunity to let their imagination run wild and layer a home with exotic objects, materials and textiles from a multitude of international cultures to create unique spaces that portray contemporary elegance.

When correctly used together in a “global style home”, disparate elements tell stories in an unfussy and relaxed way. A well-worn Indian Almirah proudly displays Balinese objet d’ art, a marble countertop is perched upon a frame made from reclaimed railway sleepers; these pieces are appropriated and curated over time, from the four corners of the globe, and not bought over a weekend at the local mall.

A treasure box

This magnificent home is as worldly as the family that lives in it. The couple’s brief to the interior designer and architect was to create something that feels as if “it has been lived in for years”, and although it’s unique in its originality and diverse features, it’s clear that a family lives here. The warmth is evident; each room tells a story. For a family that has previously lived in Spain, this house is a visual portrayal of their travels, with eclectic treasure pieces and collectables from all parts of the world – Spain, India, Bali – forming statement furnishings throughout the home.

New and old

Nowhere in this home do you witness clean lines or masses of white, modern surfaces; this family thrives on comfort and warmth. Communal areas are creatively styled with both new and old artefacts. The montage on the wall is an eye-catching display of meaningful photos, pictures and sentimental keepsakes, representing the lives of the residents.

Art attack

One of the most striking aspects of this home is its art collection. With a fascination for the human face, the owner has carefully selected the artworks to enhance the space, with the neutral interior offering up the perfect canvas. The pieces were gleaned over years of living, working and travelling around the world, with key items bought everywhere from London and Amsterdam to Dullstroom, reflecting the home owner’s truly global approach to design and living.

Console of curiosities

Throughout the house, bold accent colours identify each space. Far from overpowering, the statement walls balance out the rich, earthy tones of the variegated timber ceilings. A selection of curiosities grace this console table. The triptych above the console further solidifies and enhances the earthy, natural feel of the collection.

The owners of this home wanted an organic, yet contemporary, interior to blend with both the exterior and its surroundings. They have two young boys, dogs and many friends with children who visit often, and were looking for a home they would all enjoy.
