Recycled rural residence

Written by Jess Binns

Set in among the quaint, chocolate-box homes of Orgeres, France, lies a new and unique residence that couldn’t be further from the local architectural vein.

Positioned on a 160sqm sloping plot, the three-bedroom family house built out of recycled shipping containers was the brainchild of architect Josue Gillet and his team at 2A Design. Due to budget constraints and a tricky site, Gillet looked to fellow French company B3 Ecodesign for inspiration, following the success of its modular housing systems using old containers.

Working with the contours on site, the house comprises three levels. Part of the roof was set at an angle to echo the hill on which the home sits. This also gives the house its identity, as well as the nickname “The Flying Box”.

Designed with a generous open-plan living area and a strong connection to the outdoors through large glazed walls, the house was built off site and completed within three months. It’s a fun and daring build, with strong eco credentials that add to the attraction.

Could this eye-catching living solution be the home of the future?

Best wishes,
