Dulux colour consultant Palesa Ramaisa tells us why we should paint 2018 in a soothing shade of Pictured Rocks.

Why was Pictured Rocks chosen as the 2018 Dulux Colour of the Year?

We live high-paced lives, where we’re constantly fighting to have enough hours in the day to get everything done. A large amount of unpredictably and rapid technological advancements impact on our lives and our wellbeing.

With its gentle grey-pink tones, Pictured Rocks gives a sense of the nourishing warmth of wood and tactile comfort of leather, to add harmony to our lives. The shade creates a well-balanced, calming environment where you can relax and recharge after a long day.

Another important element that Dulux has considered is to understand that we’re all different and have different personalities. Dulux understands that colour affects our emotions. Therefore, we’ve introduced different personas to suit our personalities, as well as the palette that would best suit our homes.

Why is this shade so appealing?

It’s versatile and works with what many of us already own. Because the colour can be incorporated with ease, you don’t have to give your home an entire makeover.

Pictured Rocks is a cool, calm tone. Which complementary and supplementary colours will enhance its different dimensions?

This versatile shade can be paired with 36 complementary shades. Dulux has created four palettes that seamlessly support our Colour of the Year. The Pictured Rocks home palette combines a selection of deep-purple shades and light blush-pinks.

How can you use Pictured Rocks in your home?

There are so many options. This year’s campaign uses different methods to create interesting wall features, like two-toned walls, blurred walls and how to paint an oval. These helpful methods will help the public to make decisions that work for them.

What are its best furniture counterparts?

Incorporate furniture elements in warm wooden tones or leather-and-wood. Add scatter cushions or a sofa in plush silk and velvet. Round off the look with copper ornaments, and introduce nature in the form of planters.

Another method is to add shades from Dulux’s four palettes. You can never go wrong when using our carefully formulated tools.

Will you be adding Pictured Rocks to your own home’s colour scheme?

I try to renovate my bedroom every year to create a new positive space. So, I’ll definitely be using the colour in my home. The easiest way to transform a space is to introduce a feature wall. I’m also considering the idea of a two-toned wall to create an interesting focal point.
