Tips for an organised kitchen

Written by Janine Jorgensen

By keeping your kitchen in order, it will be a stress-free space for you to enjoy. Follow our tips on how to organise your kitchen.

Separate the space into specific zones: The kitchen needs to work for you, so the layout should be practical and convenient. By allocating areas for cooking, storage, preparation, cleaning and eating, and placing appliances and equipment for each task together, you will know where everything is and have it on hand. This will make activities easier and more pleasurable.

Be smart with storage: Avoid chaos in the kitchen by investing in clever storage that can keep objects in place. Make a list of everything for which you need storage, such as glassware, crockery, pots and pans, and plan accordingly. Inserts and dividers in drawers will keep utensils tidy. Choose deep pull-out drawers rather than shelves in a cupboard, to provide more storage and make reaching for cooking equipment easier. These types of drawers are also useful in the pantry, as you can see at a glance if you need to top up on anything.

Make the environment multifunctional: Use all available space in the kitchen to your advantage. Add shelves and/or drawers to an island. Install strip lighting and a pull-down shelf to hold cookbooks or a tablet under cabinets when needed. Another idea is to place bins, especially for recycling, beneath the U-pipe below the sink.
