How To Living Spaces

How to update your living room

Written by Shereen Lurie

Have you grown tired of the look and feel of your lounge? It could be time for a revamp. Instead of spending thousands on costly renovations, a few minor changes may be all that’s needed to update your space.

Work out your budget

Before you start with any redesign, work out how much money you have to spend. Do your research to find out exactly what’s available within your price range. If you’re keen to splash out on big-ticket items, choose classic pieces that will stand the test of time, instead of trendy pieces that will easily date.

Devise a new colour scheme

If you’re looking for a complete refresh, start with a neutral backdrop and then layer furniture, fabrics and colours. Create a scrapbook of images that inspire you, and see which colours and themes most often crop up. If you notice alot of soft, neutral colours, rustic details and patterned fabrics, you may want to choose a French decorating style. But, if your scrapbook is characterised by vibrant colours and exotic accessories, you may be drawn to an Indian or Moroccan themed room.

Tell a story

Instead of keeping old photographs and curios stashed away in your attic, put them on display and allow them to tell a story of your loves and passions. Curated displays, grouped by theme, provide an eclectic look and feel to any space.

Invest in art

The easiest way to update a room is to display fresh, modern art. A gallery wall, with a collection of mismatched artworks, is eye-catching and fun. Retro movie posters are not just for a home cinema, but are a cost-effective visual statement for any room. Your options with art are unlimited, so use this opportunity as a way to express your personality.

Update your hardware

Modernising your lighting fixtures, doorknobs and hinges will make a world of difference in changing the overall appearance and mood of the room. Swap old-fashioned sconces, coverings and brass door hardware for pieces with pizazz. If you want to make your lounge the focal point in your home, invest in a statement chandelier and layer your room around that.
